Foundations

Foundations is a two-semester, apprentice level (ages 12 and 13) course wherein we will examine Pre-Colonial through Revolutionary War history, as well as the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights of the United States of America.

This class, however, will NOT be boring. We plan to fill every week with fun, hands-on, thought provoking games, activities, and experiences to help you see, feel, taste, hear, and much better understand this pivotal "moment" in world history. We will examine the famous AND forgotten peoples, individuals, and events that helped form the patterns and practices that lead to one of the most politically stable, economically successful, religiously diverse, scientifically productive, and personally free nations in all the world. While celebrating the successes, we will not shy away from the mistakes and failures. However, knowing a more complete history, you will come away with a better understanding of the unique and influential role the United States has had on almost every nation ever since the courageous signers of the Declaration of Independence signed away their names and futures.

Our students will be expected to complete the required readings, submit weekly idea papers, give two oral presentations, engage in book discussions, memorize significant selections, and complete a variety of other enrichment activities of their choice.

NOTE: For this class, we will be using Books 1-3 of Joy Hakim’s History of US. This series will also be used in America's Promise this year and next year in the American History 2 class. If several students are taking the class or you plan on taking multiple American history classes at ASA, it may be more economical to purchase the entire set all at once.
