This semester’s opinion paper topics

If you need to catch up on your opinion papers, here are the topics!

January 25th – This week you can choose between these two choices:

Write a poem about any topic.  The poem can rhyme or be free verse.

OR write an opinion paper on this topic:

A famous poet Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote a poem about the Battles of Lexington and Concord. In his poem he used the phrase, “the shot heard round the world.” Why do you think the Battles of Lexington and Concord is a shot heard round the world? Here is a link to the poem.

February 1st – Describe a time when you saw the hand of God in YOUR life. Or in your family’s life. Did things go exactly how you wanted? How do you know God was watching out for you?

February 8th – Knowing all that you have learned about the founding up to this point, why do you think the words “We the People” are so powerful? How would a new American citizen explain the magnitude of these words to his or her family members back in another country?

February 15th – Describe a time in your life that was really hard. Maybe something scary was happening or maybe you weren’t sure what was going to happen. Or maybe something sad happened or you saw someone being sad. Did you want to give up? What did you decide to do? Thinking about that experience what would you tell yourself in that moment to motivate yourself to keep going. What did you learn from that experience?

February 22nd – Were the Articles of Confederation a failure? Why or why not? Give reasons for your answer.

February 29th –  Is it important for you to know what is in the Constitution? Why or why not? Would it help you and your family if you understood the Constitution? Why or why not? (Think about the rocks and sticks game that we played in class to help you come up with your opinion.)

March 7th –  Who is someone that you would trust to represent you? Why did you choose that person? What about them causes you to feel that they would represent you well. What topics do you know you and that person agrees on?

March 14th – Would you have enjoyed being a delegate at the real Constitutional Convention? Why or Why not?

March 21st – What is more important – to compromise and get things done or to stay true to what you believe?

March 28th – Why are the checks and balances of the three branches of government important? How do you think the checks and balances would be different if we only had two branches? Give an example of what would happen if we only had two branches.

April 11th – Think about what we have talked about in class this year. We have talked about topics such as the Explorers, Jamestown, the Pilgrims, the Colonists getting frustrated with King George, moments like Lexington & Concord, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, being a Loyalist or a Patriot (or neutral!), the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, Valley Forge, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitutional Convention. If you had the chance to go back in time to watch one of those moments, what would you want to watch? Tell us why you want to watch and and what you would be looking for. Also, is there someone we talked about in class that you would want to meet? If so, who would you want to meet? What would you ask him/her? Or would you thank him/her? What would you thank him/her for?
