Last Day of Class

Class Summary:

Today we finished learned about hexaflexagons and we played games. I hope you had fun with math this semester!

Hexaflexagons:

Here are the links to print more templates:

There are some fun videos about hexaflexagons on Khan Academy. Check them out if you want. You can even see a hexaflexagon made out of a food item (I won’t spoil the surprise here).

Homework for this Week:

  • Print the Accountability Sheet and return it to class next week. If you are unable to print it, write down the information on a piece of paper to turn in during class.
  • Optional: Watch the following YouTube videos about multiplying and dividing fractions:
  • Play a game with a member of your family or a friend. Here are some options:
    • Play a game we have already played in class.
      • Dandelions
      • Neighbors (5×5)
      • Boxed In
      • Tenzi

      • Oddball
      • Hopping Hundred
      • Mancala
      • Magic Grid Trick
      • Battleship
        • Additional guidelines:
          • Ships must be placed on integer coordinates (corners), not fractions or decimals.
          • Ships must be horizontal or vertical, not diagonal.
          • Do not place on the outside line. Keep it in the -6 to 6 range.
    • Rook: You can learn how to play Rook with your family using the deck of cards given in class.
    • Play another game with your family. Most games involve math is some way. Strategy and critical thinking are an important part of math, so those are awesome skills we can practice when playing games.
    • Play a game from this website:
  • Optional: Complete the coordinate graphing pictures from class. For each picture you complete, you can get a prize from our treasure chest. I cannot link them due to copyright issues. But if you forgot to pick them up, you can send me a slack message or email. You can turn them in anytime before the end of the school year.

We learned about Leonhard Euler and solved the Bridges of Konigsberg Puzzle. We also worked on solving equations and completed maze. We simulated solving a multi-step equation by figuring out how much money was in a set of Easter eggs. And we quizzed each other on multiplying and dividing integers.

Homework – Due March 21st

Class Summary – Pi Day:

In class we “discovered” pi by measuring the circumference and diameter of various circles and seeing the relationship between them. We also illustrated that the area of a circle is pi times the radius squared.

Homework for this Week:

  • Print the Accountability Sheet and return it to class next week. If you are unable to print it, write down the information on a piece of paper to turn in during class.

  • Work on your curriculum goal.
  • To follow up with our in class activity and discussion. Please watch these two videos:
  • Play a game with a member of your family or a friend. Here are some options:
    • New games this week:
      • Race to Pi Game: This is a game I handed out in class. There are a few things that might make the game work a bit better.
        • You will probably need more cards. I recommend using a deck of Uno cards possibly with the wilds. Or you could use two decks of playing cards.
        • It works better with more people.
        • If you draw a card you can play, you may play it immediately after drawing.
        • Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
      • Roll the 1st 10 digits of pi (Tenzi style)
        • Use 9 regular six-sided dice and 1 ten-sided die
    • Play a game we have already played in class.
      • Dandelions
      • Neighbors (5×5)
      • Boxed In
      • Tenzi
      • Tic-Tac-Toe Sums or Products with positive number or integers
