What is all this about Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Levels?

These are the names we’ve chosen for the levels of learning found at ASA. Each level has a purpose and different requirements. Learn more about Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Levels.

What are Journeyman and Master Applications?

Students asked for more accountability in their classes. Level Applications were created to fill that need. If you want to take a Journeyman or Master level class, you fill out an application, including a Self Reflection Paper. This acts as a formal commitment to yourself and your mentors. If for some reason you aren’t able to keep your commitment, you will be asked to withdraw from the class and try again when you are truly committed and ready.

What is the difference between a Depth and Breadth class?

Breadth classes at ASA allow you to study from a wide panorama of topics, gathering knowledge without a huge homework commitment. Breadth classes are more of an in-class experiential learning environment which require less homework load than depth classes, generally about an hour per week per class.

Depth classes at ASA allow you to dig deep into topics, interests, and things you are passionate about. Its like the root system of your education, establishing a strong, deep foundation of understanding. Depth classes will require more study commitment, generally more than 2 hours per week per class.

The idea of Depth and Breadth in education is founded on “A Reservoir of Living Water” by Elder David Bednar, and Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille.

Writing Mentors

Journeyman Scholars are encouraged to have a writing mentor. Master Scholars are required to have a writing mentor. Personal writing mentors will help improve your writing through one-on-one coaching. But how do you go about getting a writing mentor? Here are some ideas to help you.

2017-2018 Class Schedule

ASA offers many classes on a rotation basis–repeating classes over the years. Click here to learn more about which years classes will probably be offered.

Colors indicate the minimum level a student must be at to take the class. To qualify for Journeyman or Master classes students must submit an application and Self-Reflection paper and be accepted.
